Rotavirus in newborn nurseries: negative results from Honolulu and the New Hebrides.

چکیده
• A survey of 100 newborn infants in 2 newborn nurseries in Honolulu and 36 newborns in a hospital in the New Hebrides failed to reveal rotavirus infection, despite its presence in the surrounding community. Rotavirus infection in the neonatal period appears to be endemic in some nurseries in England and Australia, but absent from others in England, Australia, the U.S., and the New Hebrides. The infection is often asymptomatic in neonates. Rotavirus infection in the older infant (6 to 24 months) usually produces gastroenteritis and is common in both industrialized and non-industrialized countries. Whether prior neonatal infection with rotavirus is beneficial or detrimental to the older child is unknown. Longitudinal studies of rotavirus infections of children beginning at birth would be required to answer this question, and to explore the reasons for the uneven distribution of rotavirus among various newborn nurseries. Rotaviruses are the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in young children; over 50% of infants have been infected by the age of 2 years.' These viruses are prevalent during the winter months in the temperature zones and throughout the year in the tropics. 2 In children after the neonatal period, the presence of

Fecal samples were collected from a total of 112 calves with clinical signs of diarrhea and from 112 matched animals without clinical signs of diarrhea as assessed by a scoring system. The samples were investigated for the presence of Rotavi...
متن کاملRotavirus infection in the neonatal nurseries of a tertiary care hospital in India.
BACKGROUND The majority of neonatal rotavirus infections are believed to be asymptomatic, and protection from subsequent infection and disease has been reported in neonatally infected children. In this study, we present the results of a 4-year prospective surveillance in the neonatal nurseries of a tertiary care hospital in south India. METHODS Stool samples from neonates admitted for >48 hou...
متن کاملCord blood and breast-milk antibodies in neonatal rotavirus infection.
Studies were carried out during an outbreak of rotavirus type 2 infection in a neonatal nursery to determine the protective role of antibodies in cord blood and breast milk. The range, distribution, and geometric mean titres of rotavirus-specific antibody in the cord blood were similar among rotavirus-positive and rotavirus-negative neonates, and the amount of virus excreted did not correlate w...
متن کاملInvestigation of the environment and of mothers in transmission of rotavirus infections in the neonatal nursery.
A distinct feature of neonatal rotavirus infection is the association of unusual strains that appear to be prevalent only in neonatal units and persist for long periods of time. The main aims of this study were to determine if rotavirus can be detected on environmental surfaces in the neonatal nursery and whether the infection occurs in mothers of infected and uninfected neonates. Thirty rotavi...
متن کاملGene Expression of Promyelocytic Leukemia Proteins and IFN-γ Is Reduced in Rotavirus-Infected Children
Background: Rotavirus infection is one of the most common gastroenteritis in the world, and a million cases are registered to enter hospital every year. Promyelocytic leukemia proteins (PMLs) are IFN-up-regulated proteins, and one of their critical functions is working as antiviral proteins. Recently, promyelocytic leukemia isoform II (PML-II) has been depicted as an isoform responsible for the...
